CL: How do you go about finding songs for your albums?
MS: We are always writing music and are already writing songs for our
future albums. But we also find great songs from various song writers, our
record company (Rounder Records) and also our album producer.
CL: What's your favorite song among all the songs you've recorded and what's the story behind it?
MS: That is a difficult question because each song stands out to us. Welove all the songs on our album. But for right now we are very proud of our new single, "Long Way to Fall" because it has a great meaning and also a great upbeat melody. We are also about to film another music video for it!
CL: How much creative control do you have over your music?
MS: Something wonderful about Rounder Records is how they gave us complete creative control to record the album we wanted to make. We picked out all the songs, played the instruments, and sang all the vocals on the album. It truly represents who we are because we were allowed creative control. We are very grateful.
CL: How much do your songs influence your audience?
MS: We get fan letters everyday on how our music is touching people in so many different ways. Music is very powerful and can really move people. I love hearing how our music is affecting and influencing people. It feels great and we are so happy people are responding to our music so well! There are also now many young people playing banjo and fiddle and thanking us for introducing them to the instruments. It feels great!
CL: The internet is playing a bigger and bigger part in the world of music. Has the internet hurt or helped you and how would you like to see it evolve?
MS: www.malibustorm.com is our website. It has pictures, tour dates, music videos, and news. I think the internet is great and can give bands exposure and introduce them to people from all around the world. I love the internet! I'm always online discovering new bands and shopping!
CL: Who do you look up to musically and where do your musical roots come from?
Answers: Music has always been a strong part of our family. There has always been music in the house. But I remember being very young and listening and loving Dolly Parton. She is an amazing songwriter and singer and a big influence. However, we listen to all genres of music. Def Leppard is our favorite rock band.
CL: What do you think about today's Country Music versus its roots and where do you see it going in the future?
MS: Country Music has a wonderful, strong future ahead. We are very excited to be part of it. I think country music is growing and growing and the music is getting more diverse. Artists are taking more chances musically and allowing themselves to be different. There are also country singers now from all over the USA and the world. Country fans are the greatest because they truly love the music. Country has a strong future and we are happy to be part of the future.
CL: Has your journey to success been a hard or an easy road?
MS: I think our journey has been exciting, rewarding, and honorable. We have been doing this for a long time. Playing music festivals and touring for around ten years now. It seemed natural that we would form a band together since we all play instruments and sing, however we have worked very hard to get to the point we are at right now.
CL: What drives you? What inspired you to become an artist?
MS: I think what drives us is the fact that we truly love music and we enjoy what we do. Having a strong passion for something can give anyone drive or determination.
CL: What does it take to be a Country Star?
MS: Loving the music, being good to your fans, and being true and proud of who you are!
CL: What's unique about you that differentiates you from other artists?
MS: I think we have a very unique sound. We don't try to sound like anyone else. We also play instruments (banjo, fiddle, bass). We are strong with our vocals and harmony. Our music has influences and roots from many different genres. We are also from California and we are siblings.
CL: What's the best thing about being a star and what's the hardest thing?
MS: Well there are advantages to being a celebrity. You get to attend a lot of fun events/parties and meet cool people and idols that you have been looking up to for so many years. But there are pros and cons. I would say the con is the invasion of privacy. Once you become a star, you loose your privacy and people spread false rumors about you, which is something nobody can prepare you for.
CL: What moments in your career stand out in your memory as highlights and achievements which you're proud of?
MS: This has been the greatest year for us. Our single "Photograph" hit number #3 on the Billboards Country Single Sales Chart, our music video is playing on TV, and we just performed at the Grand Ole Opry. Our faces are on billboards and magazines. We have done various tv shows/appearances. Those are all highlights so far!
CL: When you get time off, how do you like to relax?
MS: Well like everyone else we love to spend time with family and friends, we love to party, shop, vacation and go to movies.
CL: Many European fans travel to Nashville for Fan Fair because of the opportunity to see so many of their favorite stars at the same time.
MS: We love our European Fans! We got to tour Europe a few times and the fans are especially nice and wonderful people. We have so many great memories on our tours in Europe. We love to meet our fans. Also you could check out our website: www.malibustorm.com which will tell you where we are. Or you can go to www.rounder.com
CL: When you're on tour, do you have time to play tourist?
MS: As a traveling musician, we get to see so many great cities and countries. We try as hard as we can to break away and play tourist. I always bring cameras and take a lot of pictures. But sometimes it is too busy to get out.
CL: Can your European fans look forward to seeing you:
MS: Absolutely! We can't wait to get to Europe and meet all our fans! We performed in Europe many times. We have so many wonderful memories. The people are so warm and gracious. We can't wait to go back!
