The Gospel According to GOLDIE

Reese to play Anna Nicole, Kenny’s Not Gay and Terri and Greg Split Up

It’s been a busy week in the wonderful world of country music fraught with awards, gossip and divorce.

Nashvillian Reese Witherspoon is rumored to have worn all black to audition for a Lifetime TV movie on the life of Anna Nicole Smith last week. I don’t buy that for a minute. First off Reese Witherspoon is an Academy Award winning actress. She does not audition. Secondly, as interesting as the life of Anna Nicole Smith might be, it’s going to be a TV movie, Reese only does film and finally, if Reese were to agree to play someone on TV, Anna Nicole is no June Carter Cash and there is no way they’d get Reese to play her.

Now, having said all that, I can understand why the mighty Hollywood rumor mill might have spawned such a crazy lie. Reese would be perfect for the role. She has the rare ability to play sweet, naïve and vulnerable, all the while remaining strong and dignified. And the pair do have a few things in common. They’re both southern, blonde and know a thing or do about custody battles.

Last fall Reese filed for divorce from Ryan Phillipe citing irreconcilable differences. In the court papers, she asked for joint custody of the couple's two children, Ava and Deacon. She also sought physical custody of her kids, that Ryan only be granted visitation rights, and no spousal support.

Kenny Chesney’s had a lot of explaining to do since his recent divorce. During his latest "60 Minutes" interview, Kenny explained why the word "fraud" was used on the document filed by Renee Zellweger to annul their marriage and he denied the gay rumors it sparked.

"We thought the least harmful was fraud because it is kind of broad ... doesn't specify," Kenny said. "And boy, we were wrong." He went on to add, "It's not true. Period. Maybe I should have come out and said, 'No, I'm not (gay) -- but I didn't want to draw any more attention to it."

Kenny said he has no regrets. He loved Renee and that while it lasted, it "was real." Can someone please explain to me why Hollywood celebrities feel the need to get married if they’re with anyone longer than three months? I don’t get it.

One last thing about Kenny. According to Nashville Kat, the next time you see him on TV, look at his left wrist. He’ll be wearing what people in the islands call a Caribbean knot bracelet. Look at the horseshoe that’s on the knot. If the end of the horseshoe points up toward his heart, he’s taken but if it points down, away from his heart, he’s unattached and available.

Now I don’t know if Valentine’s Day had anything to do with it or if there’s something in the water in Nashville these days, but it seems yet another couple took the time to sit back and reevaluate their commitment to one another.

Terri Clark filed for divorce from Greg Kaczor on Friday (Feb. 16) in Nashville after 17 months of marriage. Greg had been Terri’s tour manager for years, but he will no longer work in that role.

They had known each other for 10 years and were married on Sept. 17, 2005. It was her second marriage. "This is very sad,” Terri said. Greg is one of my dearest friends and a wonderful person, and we are sorry that we're here. This is an amicable split, and we appreciate everyone's concern and respect for our sorting this out. No big drama ... just a couple heavy hearts. Anyone who's ever been here, I am sure, understands."

Terri, I’m so sorry about the split. The last time I saw you two together you both seemed so happy I was sure your love would stand the test of time. Hang in there girlfriend, and whatever you do, keep your knickers on.

Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams paid a visit to LA’s Record Plant last Tuesday. They were there to pitch songs to Reba McEntire.

According to producer Tony Brown, “Pharrell heard about the project and heard we were in the studio and he wrote two or three things he wanted her (Reba) to hear. Justin wrote a song for her to sing with him (on the album), and she loved it. The Record Plant was full of people like Wyclef Jean, Will.i.am and the Pussycat Dolls. Reba and LeAnn Rimes were in the back recording. It was a pretty happening place.”

Is that cool or what? I love hearing that musicians from all genres are embracing country music. It’s about time all the naysayers out there realize that we’re a lot more than just a bunch of truck driving rednecks. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I love my truck and I might be just a little red around the neck.

Other artists set to collaborate with Reba are Don Henley and Carole King.

And finally, the Dixie Chicks cleaned up at the Grammys. Not talking about them would be like ignoring the pink elephant in the middle of the room. So, here we go.

The Chicks sang “Not Ready to Make Nice” but the Grammy Awards were ready to make a statement and the girls made off with five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year for Taking the Long Way, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Not Ready To Make Nice.

The Chicks also won Grammys for Best Country Album (Taking the Long Way) and Country Performance by a Duo or Group with vocal (Not Ready to Make Nice)

After accepting one of the country awards, Natalie Maines said, "Well, to quote the great 'Simpsons' -- 'Heh-Heh’”. Charming. This is your time to shine and that’s all you have to say? Whatever. It upset people and that’s what you do best.

So it’s no surprise that politics became a recurring subject that night. Here’s a sampling of what stars had to say after the awards.

Marti McGuire said, “What happened to us really drove us to make an album that said a lot. It had a political stance and I think people identify with that. (If) that’s part of the success, we’ll take it.”

Personally, I’m curious to know whether Marti and Emily Robison still want to break up with Natalie after all those wins. I’d break up with her just for wearing that ugly dress. With all the money she has you think she could manage something a little more flattering.

John Mayer, who bagged multiple awards, said he was particularly proud of the Chicks’ wins. “It’s hard enough to make a record when you’re just chasing the ghost of your last album, but they were running from a lot of ghosts. And to stay that subtle and just write great songs. That’s all the weapons you need.”

A nearby Ryan Seacrest literally dragged John in front of his camera, pulling him away from another interview. And, after briefly discussing his music, not the Chicks’ awards, Ryan got to the juicy part of the interview and asked the question on everybody's mind: What's the scoop with Jessica Simpson? John answered in what sounded like Japanese and then suggested, "Find a Japanese person and decode it. Subtitle it. Then you'll have your answer."

John Mayer really can speak Japanese – and the translation is in! He said, "She's a lovely woman and I'm glad to be with her.” Awww.

Other country wins at the Grammy - Carrie Underwood won Best Female Country Vocal Performance for "Jesus, Take the Wheel" which also won for Best Country Song. Vince Gill got his 18th Grammy for Best Male Country vocal for "The Reason Why”, and Jennifer Nettles and Bon Jovi won Best Country Collaboration for "Who Says You Can't Go Home”.

And to end on a high note, Carrie and LeAnn Rimes were among the artists listed by People.com as the best dressed at the Grammys.

Until next time, it’s not what they say about you, it’s what they whisper.
