The Country Gospel According to GOLDIE

3/4/07
Angela Wins, Miranda Hates Amanda and Joe Sings for Anna Nicole

Did you watch the Nashville Star finale Thursday night? Well, you didn’t miss much. Angela Hacker (left) won, just as every media outlet out there predicted. Don’t get me wrong, I think Angela is extremely talented and she was my pick from the beginning. I just hope winning the show does more for her career than it’s done for most of its past contestants.

Since George Canyon came in second in 2004 and went on to top the charts and stay at the top in Canada, the closest thing to a star the show’s made is Miranda Lambert. Her CD went platinum. Everyone else has pretty much faded away.

Speaking of Miranda, The Wilkinsons were by the CMT Canada studios last week to tape a special episode of Central to promote the release of their latest disc Home and the launch of Season 2 of their self-titled TV series.

While they were in studio, Paul McGuire asked Amanda Wilkinson (right) if she had any good Nashville gossip for him.  Amanda said that the last time she was in Nashville she ran into her friend Blake Shelton

When he saw her Blake said, "My girlfriend hates you."
Startled, Amanda replied, "Who's your girlfriend?"
Blake said, "Miranda Lambert."
"But, I've never even met Miranda Lambert.  Why does she hate me?"
"Because I told her I've had a crush on you for years."

I can see why.  Amanda is the cutest gal I've ever met and I’m always amazed at how such a big voice can come from such a little girl. Check out the show. It’s a comedy-reality series about the trials and tribulations of The Wilkinsons as they deal with the ramifications of living and working together, find a new manager and deal with less-than welcome neighbors.

If you're a fan, you're in for a real treat.  If you're not, check out the show anyway. I’ll bet you’ll become one. Season II of The Wilkinsons begins Wednesday, March 7th on CMT Canada.  If you're in the states and don't get CMT Canada, log onto cmt.ca, they'll have video diaries, deleted scenes and bloopers on their media player.

Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler will all appear on American Idol this season. Kellie appeared last week and I’m happy to report there were no waterworks this time. Carrie will sing her current hit, "Wasted," on March 8 during her second performance on the show since winning the competition in 2005.

No specific dates have been announced for Martina’s appearance, yet, but we do know Martina is one of nine celebrity coaches who will work with the contestants. She’ll also perform on the show. As for Kellie, even though it seems as though we’ve been seeing a lot of her on the boob tube lately, her appearance on Idol was actually be her first time on the show since she was a finalist last year.

One last bit of Idol news. As Kellie Pickler prepared to perform on the show last Thursday her father, Clyde “Bo” Pickler, was facing a judge in an Albemarle, North Carolina courtroom. Papa Pickler received a 90-day suspended sentence and one year on probation after pleading guilty to simple assault on his wife and communicating threats to her, earlier this month. The assault with a deadly weapon charge was dropped. Clyde should be thankful the judge wasn't Simon Cowell.

Kenny Chesney kicked off this year's "Keg in the Closet Tour," last Monday (February 26th) at the Jupiter Bar & Grille in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Kenny, Kenny, Kenny…Keg in the Closet??? There are three words you should stay away from and those are it. If you called the tour the Male Chauvinist Pig Tour no one would bat an eyelash, but Keg in the Closet?

Kenny said, “They're always absolutely insane at the Jupiter Bar & Grille. They set the bar pretty high, they kick us in the butt, and really get us digging into our memory bank for songs.”

Well, whether he’s closeted or not, Kenny’s shows continue to sell-out in record speed. Tickets for Kenny 's "Keg in the Closet" college show at Common Grounds Coffeehouse in Gainesville, Florida last Wednesday night, sold out in six minutes. The smaller 'Closet' shows are a tune-up for Kenny's "Flip Flop Summer" tour, launching on April 12 in Omaha, Nebraska.

And finally, Joe Nichols sang at Anna Nicole Smith's funeral Friday, March 2nd. He said, "I met Anna Nicole at the Opry in 2005 when she came backstage following the show. I remember she had a dynamic personality, and her love of traditional country music was evident." This begs the question, did they? I guess we’ll never know for sure. This we do know, Joe was one of Nicole’s favorite singers and he performed two songs: "I'll Wait for You," a track from his III album, and a country classic, "On the Wings of a Dove”.

Anna’s been dead for close to a month (February 8th) and I think I speak for everyone when I say I’m relieved they finally laid her to rest. Some 300 invited guests and Entertainment Tonight cameras were expected to attend the funeral, but in the end only 100 showed.

Still, it was one hell of a show. With feuding guests, booing spectators and a coffin draped in a pink cover studded with rhinestones spelling out her name, Anna Nicole’s funeral was part soap opera, part circus. Her “companion” Howard K. Stern, her mother Virgie Arthur and her former boyfriend Larry Birkhead barely managed to put their bickering aside for the ceremonies. Guitarist Slash, formerly of Guns & Roses was also in attendance.

Anna Nicole was buried next to her 20-year-old son, Daniel, who died in September of a drug overdose while visiting his mother in the hospital after she gave birth. At the gravesite, a small flock of doves was released and onlookers, a mixture of Bahamians and tourists, spontaneously broke into the hymn “When Peace Like a River” as Anna Nicole’s white hearse reached the cemetery.

Until next time, it’s not what they say about you, it’s what they whisper.
