The Country Gospel According to GOLDIE

4/18/07

2007 CMT Awards... a la Goldie!

CMT Canada’s CMT Awards Pre-Party started off with a bang and I got to watch it all from the studio’s control room.

Beverley Mahood performed “Good To Be Alive” for CMT Canada’s studio guests and viewers at home.  She looked stunning in a sixties-inspired mini-dress, while Paul McGuire rocked a cool Muzik Mafia t-shirt under a slick black leather jacket.

Director Joel Stewart wore his trademark plaid fedora and Road Hammers jacket, trying, once again, to top the Awards worst-dressed list.

Elissa Lansdell, CMT Canada’s Nashville correspondent, gave us her predictions from her Nashville dressing room and the audience booed when she predicted that Keith Urban would win for worst dressed.

Joel Stewart, told viewers about CMT’s Casting Call for a “fan turns host” and ribbed Paul about having to share the limelight with the future day time host.

Beverley gave a soulful performance of “Route 66”.

Elissa came to us again from her make-up chair in Nashville with her predictions.  She predicted the Dixie Chicks would win against all odds which was little more than some wishful thinking on her part since the Chicks didn’t make the top four acts being voted on for the award.

CMT US’s Katie Cook came to us in a silky patterned dress that made her right breast look bigger than the left.  Katie chatted with Blake Shelton who looked nice and sexy in a pair of jeans and a black shirt.  He had the requisite bad boy two-day scruff and couldn’t keep his eyes away from Katie’s cleavage.

Kellie Pickler fought with her hairdresser and obviously lost.  Not sure what that rat’s nest of braids and whisps was supposed to be, but whatever it was, it didn’t work.  On the plus side, she wore a lovely gold dress that nicely accentuated her new boob job.

Carrie Underwood looked like she made herself a dress from her kitchen curtains but she’s so gorgeous she could wear a paper bag and look great.

LeAnn Rimes looked anorexic in a pale yellow Marquesa mini dress and Louboutin pumps.  Look for LeAnn on Kellogs cereal boxes next month.

Jennifer Nettles also seems to have joined the Hollywood Diet bandwagon.  She looked lovely but a little too thin in a silvery grey dress.

Josh Turner turned heads despite the fact that he obviously put his clippers on the same setting to shave both his head and chin.  He wore all black and with that voice, I’m sure no one would have cared even if he hadn’t shaved at all.

Gretchen Wilson looked great, sporting a pair of tight jeans and a low-key and low-cut fitted black blazer.  When Katie asked her about her rock-tight abs, Gretchen said, “I think I just drank too much and I was dehydrated. They (her abs) just popped out.” Strange. Abs are not what pops out when I drink too much.

The Show:

Rascal Flatts rocked “Life Is A Highway”.

Taylor Swift won Breakthrough Artist. She ran up to the podium pulling up her strapless dress no less than three times on the way lest it slip off. Taylor, it’s called two-way tape. Your stylist should have a roll of the stuff. If not, get some.

Sugarland won for Duo.

Kenny Chesney performed “Two Bad Feet” (title TBC) wearing his trademark sleeveless t-shirt, black cowboy hat and skinny jeans. ‘Nuff said.

A drunken John Rich & his buddy Big Kenny introduced Hank Williams Jr. who performed “The Gospel According To Bocephus”.  Very cool, albeit very low-key.

Video Director went to Roman White for Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats”.

Keith Urban performed “Stupid Boy” with the worst bed-head I’ve seen in a long time…Seriously, I love Keith but his hair looked nasty. So what I’d like to know is…where was Nicole Kidman during all this?

Jeff Foxworthy sported a Dallas Texas Cheerleaders’ skirt in a joke that otherwise fell pretty flat.

Female Video of the Year went to Carrie Underwood. Too bad her dress looked like a dog’s breakfast.

Sugarland performed. Jennifer Nettles wore a shiny throwback-to-the-80’s white suit with pointy shoulder pads.  And while I’m at it, someone please fire the guy who directed the show?  The rack focus going on and off Jennifer during her performance was barely worthy of a bunch of first-year film students.

Rosanne Cash presented the Johnny Cash Visionary Award to Kris Kristofferson. Then Willie Nelson, Marty Scorcese and Keith Urban spoke of Kris – the man, the story, his life, acting career and of the impact he’s had on their lives.  Kris was visibly touched when he hugged a tearful Rosanne.  He said, “Don’t cry or I’ll start crying, too” and his voice broke.

Kris told a solemn audience that 42 years ago, he shook Johnny Cash’s hand backstage at the Ryman Auditorium and it changed his life.  Johnny was Kris’ inspiration, his life and most importantly, his friend.  Kris added, “John was like the North star.  You could guide your ship by him.”

Bon Jovi performed a really lame song - apparently it’s their new single.

A bouncy Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean announced the Wide Open Country category. Jack Ingram won.

Some flamer in a purple shirt introduced Carrie Underwood’s performance.

She rocked a pair of gold hot pants, a black halter top and leather leg warmers reminiscent of a young Shania Twain crossed with a slutty Faith Hill.  Still, she looked amazing.  Kicked a chair into the audience though…not sure what that was all about.

Kenny Chesney won Male Video of The Year (video directed by Shaun Silva). Kenny brought Shaun up on stage ‘cause he wanted us to see what he looks like.”  He kind of looks like Johnny Depp – in fact, Shaun played Johnny in Terry Clark’s video “Girls Lie Too.”  Cute.

Kellie Pickler and Melissa Peterman (the actress who plays “Babara Jean” on Reba) presented the Video of the Year category, resorting to the line “Aren’t we pretty?” when one of their jokes fell flat.  (Inset eye roll here.)  Rascal Flatts won.

Dierks Bentley performed “It’s A Long Trip Alone”. He looks great with the shorter locks.

Toby Keith performed “High Maintenance Woman”.

Barbara Mandrell presented the award for Video of the Year and Carrie Underwood won for “Before He Cheats”.  Total for Carrie that night – three awards.

And finally, Martina McBride sang “Do It Anyway”. She wore a short pale yellow dress and her hair pulled back in a ponytail.

Fashion-wise, it was the year of the short yellow dress.  LeAnn Rimes, Martina McBride and Kellie Pickler all wore yellow.  Of the three, I preferred Martina’s.  It was the classiest and most understated.

Performance-wise Carrie Underwood showed the world why she is at the top and continuing to rise. She truly is a star and no amount of bad advice from her stylist can dampen her star.

All in all, a great time was had by... all.

Remember, “it’s not what they say about you, it’s what they whisper.”
