The Country Gospel According to GOLDIE

Carrie Steals the Spotlight, Shania Rocks the Vote and Kellie’s Dating Jordin

If you’re like me you’re one of the American Idol fans who helped submit a record 74 million votes for last week’s finale. And now, you’re probably, as I am, looking for a new ‘guilty pleasure’ TV show to provide you with the perfect excuse not to mow the lawn, finish your spring cleaning or to cross off one of the dozens of housekeeping chores on your list.

If you’re Canadian, it’s a no-brainer. The new season of Canadian Idol premiere’s June 5th on CTV. If you’re American, might I suggest On The Lot? It’s not about music but it’s a country song in the making. Hard work, sleepless nights, high hopes and crushed dreams. Last week’s premiere was wonderfully cringe worthy, as reality shows are wont to be, and I’ve already got my money on Zach L., the kid from Vancouver and the only Canadian left on the show.

But back to Idol where, once again, Carrie Underwood stole the show with a graceful, soaring cover of "She's Leaving Home," backed by the female finalists. She looked beautiful, was sweet and modest when Clive Davis awarded her with selling six million copies of her debut album, "Some Hearts", and quickly turned the spotlight back to Jordin and Blake for whom it was a really big night.

No sign of Tony Romo at the finale but I’m sure he wasn’t far behind cheering his new gal on. They were spotted together May 11th at the Snapple Theatre Center where Carrie went to cheer fellow Idol contestant, Anthony Federov, performing in “The Fantasticks.” Apparently the two have remained good friends since their time on Idol together. For those of you who don’t remember him, Anthony was the blond kid with the hole-shaped scar on his throat.

One last thing about Carrie, she’s in the running for the World's Sexiest Vegetarian again this year after winning in 2005. Other country stars on the list include Chely Wright, Emmylou Harris and Shania Twain. Head over to www.goveg.com to cast your vote.

Speaking of Shania, the queen of country’s "Rock This Country!" is a Round One winner among nine songs being voted on for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign theme. Log onto to hillaryclinton.com to vote. In other Shania news, her second fragrance “Shania Starlight” is due in stores this fall.

Dierks Bentley got a boat as a gift from Kenny Chesney last year after their tour ended. Kenny blindfolded Dierks, led him to the back of the bus where the boat had been trucked in just so Dierks could see it and climb around in it, then Kenny had it driven back to Dierk’s house in Nashville. Say what you will, Kenny is one of the most generous guys in country music. He gave Keith Urban a motorcycle after they toured together and Renee Zellwegger half his assets after they…er, nevermind.

It's official: Kelli Pickler is dating Nashville Predators hockey player Jordin Tootoo. “We’ve been seeing each other since January, but we kept it under wraps,” Kellie told Us magazine. Jordin, who is originally from Churchill, Manitoba and has Inuit Eskimo lineage, reportedly invited the Albemarle, NC native to one of his games and the romance began to blossom from there. Kellie says she plans to visit his hometown this summer. “I’m going to build an igloo!” What is it with American Idol blond bombshells and dating rising sports stars? First Carrie now Kellie? Very ‘high school cheerleader dates town jock’ if you ask me.

Meanwhile, another blond bombshell’s put an end to her highly publicized relationship. John Mayer and Jessica Simpson have broken up. Last weekend he performed a set at a comedy place in NY talking about being single and complaining that Carrie Underwood’s hit "Before He Cheats" is too aggressive toward guys. Poor John. Feeling a little hard done by these days? I hear Cameron Diaz is newly single and looking.

Until next time, remember, “It’s not what they say about you, it’s what they whisper.”
